Stainless Steel Rebar

Stainless steel rebar - Longer life for structures

Corrosion of steel reinforcement is the main cause of premature failure of concrete structures today, with stainless steel reinforcement bar increasingly being the preferred solution.

Stainless rebar has been used successfully in numerous bridge and construction projects in areas most prone to corrosion attack, offering great value for money by extending structure life spans while minimizing maintenance need.

Although carbon steel reinforcement bar is sufficient in many construction projects, there are cases where the natural protection provided by concrete is not enough. This is especially so in marine type environments and where de-icing is used, leading to chloride induced corrosion attack. The use of stainless steel rebar in these environments, although initially more expensive, delivers lower long-term cost due to longer structure life and minimized maintenance need.

Stainless steel reinforcement bar is also a solution in environments where it is important to have a non-magnetic material as well as in structures having a design life of over 500 years, where the protection provided by the concrete is inevitably lost due to carbonization.

Duplex rebar

In recent years there has been a marked increase in use of duplex stainless steel rebar. This is essentially because duplex not only provides the same corrosion resistance as austenitic stainless steel, but also the mechanical properties of carbon steel. Duplex stainless steel grades have been used successfully in many projects, delivering further advantage due to their low nickel content.
