Ignots, Slab, Blooms & Billets
Slabs, Ignots, Blooms & Billets - semi-finished products
Ingots and continuously cast slab, bloom and billet used as feedstock for coil, plate, forging, rod and bar applications.
Ingots
Liquid steel is uphill teemed into cast iron molds. Wide end section (ingot top) 629 x 629, 480 x 480. Narrow end section (ingot bottom) 452 x 452, 340 x 340.
Other ingot shapes and sizes can be produced to special order.
Concast Slab
Slab length is limited to a maximum of 15000mm and slab weight is limited to a maximum of 30 tons
Slab tolerances
Length: The actual delivered slab length will not deviate from the ordered slab length by more than ± 50mm (apart from the last slab of a cast or sequence).
Weight: The actual weight of an individual delivered slab will not deviate from the calculated slab weight in the order by more than ± 200kg (apart from the last slab of a cast or sequence).
Width: The actual delivered slab width will not deviate from the ordered slab width by more than ± 20mm.
Slab surface condition
Slabs are supplied in either ground or black condition as agreed with the customer. Standard Outokumpu practice is to grind the front and back slabs from each cast, and to grind slabs in the case of certain grades and processing restrictions.
Concast Bloom
Bloom tolerances
Length: The delivered bloom length will not deviate from the ordered bloom length by ± 50mm (apart from the last bloom of a cast or sequence).
Weight: The weight of an individual delivered bloom will not deviate from the calculated bloom weight in the order by more than ± 50kg (apart from the last bloom of a cast or sequence).
Bloom surface condition
Blooms are supplied in the unground condition.
Concast Billet
Billet nominal dimension (mm) : 127 x 127, 140 x 140x 150 x 150x 180 x 180 Billet length (mm) : 3600 - 12000
Billet tolerances
Length: The nominal tolerance on billet length is ±50mm. Where a length range is specified the delivered lengths shall be within this range. No lengths shall be delivered below the minimum quoted. Where billets are ordered with a primary length requirement wherever possible a secondary acceptable “short” length should be specified to optimize cast weight and/or cut backs for quality reasons. (The proportion of shorts shall not exceed 10% without prior approval).
Billet surface condition
Billets will normally be supplied as fit for purpose, for example, free from surface defects which will be detrimental after reheating and rolling. Defects present in the cast billet may be removed by spot grinding, corner grinding or full grinding depending on the severity of the defect and at the discretion of the supplier.
Tolerances shown are for guidance only - individual customer requirements should be specified on customer orders.
Degerfors stainless: rolled and forged billet
The feedstock for rolled and forged billet is ingot and bloom, primarily supplied by SMACC.
Rolled billet
By adopting a bloom cross section of 400 x 300mm Degerfors stainless is able to roll larger final dimensions up to 210mm in both round and square sections. Blooms are heated in an eight oxy-fuel heated pit furnace. All blooms are first rolled in a roughing mill prior to finishing. Products are cut to standard lengths of 3000 to 12000mm. The entire heating and rolling process is carefully controlled and monitored. Rolled billets are produced in round and square sections 75 to 210mm in size dependent upon grade.
Forged billet
For larger sizes in round and square section, i.e. 160 to 240mm, dependent upon grade, blooms are forged at third party hire-workers.
